The addiction treatment center was established in 1987 on the initiative of people who promoted the ideas of Monar. Currently, it is one of the best therapy centers in Poland providing help to people addicted to psychoactive substances and alcohol. The MONAR Association - Addiction Therapy Center provides health services based on a contract with the National Health Fund.

The name Makondo is a play on words, a combination of the first syllables of the name of the town Majdan Kozic Dolne. It is also a magical land from Marquez's novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude".
