Earth Day is observed on April 22 every year worldwide. In year 1969 at UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell put up the proposal to dedicate a day to honor the earth and the concept of peace, which was celebrated on March 21, 1970 for the first time. Later after a month, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson founded a separate Earth Day which was held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later honored with Presidential Medal of Freedom award to recognize the work in his field. Though this April 22 Earth Day was focused on United States, an organization which was launched by Denis Hayes, he was national coordinator originally in 1970, it was taken international in 1990 and various events were organized in 141 nations.
Various events and activities are organized to showcase the support in favor of environmental protection. It is now being celebrated in more than 193 countries and Coordinated by Earth Day Network. Numerous communities work in this direction and an entire week of activities focus on environmental issues that the world is facing and makes them a center of attention.
