How stroke is different from heart attack?
Both stroke and heart attack are fatal and can lead to death if not treated on time. Some people consider stroke and heart attack to be one and the same thing due to some of the striking similarities. They are similar to one another in few contexts but are different in many aspects.
Heart attack is caused due to inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscles. This can happen due to the formation of plaque (because of high cholesterol levels) in the coronary artery (responsible for supplying oxygenate blood to the heart muscles).
Whereas, stroke refers to the “brain attack” caused due to stopped or inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to brain tissues. The reason of the stroke can be the formation of clot in an artery within the brain or plaque build-up in the carotidartery (carry blood to the brain) this type of stroke is called ischemic stroke. An another form of stroke is haemorrhagic stroke, occurs when some blood vessel in the brain ruptures due to high blood pressure and the blood leaks into the surrounding.
Symptoms
Heart attack and stroke are the health problems which occur suddenly without prior warnings. Their symptoms depend upon:
• Patients age
• Gender
• Severity of the attack
• Overall health history
• High cholesterol
• High blood pressure
Only few of these symptoms are similar, they are mostly different.
Symptoms of Heart attack:-
• Chest discomfort
• Nausea
• Heart burn
• Stomach pain
• Cold sweat
• Pain that spreads to the arm
• Dizziness
Symptoms of stroke:-
• Severe headache
• Numbness or weakness in face, arm or leg, paralysis of one side of body orif the attack is severe it can also lead to total body paralysis.
• Visual impairment
• Difficulty in speaking
• Light headedness
• Loss of co-ordination and balance
• Confusion
Diagnosis
Depending on the symptoms, the patient is likely to get a CT scan which if shows bleeding or the regions receiving inadequate blood supply indicates stroke. Moreover, MRI can also be performed.
The patients having symptoms indicating heart attack are diagnosed with the help of electrocardiogram which is used to check the health of the heart muscles. Blood tests can also be performed to check for some enzymes (lysozyme) that if present indicate heart attack. Cardiac catheterization can also be performed.
Treatment
 Heart attack
In some cases only medication or lifestyle changes may not be enough and either angioplasty (with stent) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) may be necessary.
Catheter having a small balloon at its tip is used to perform angioplasty. Doctors insert the catheter inside the blood vessel and inflate the balloon at the site of the blockage. This balloon squeezes the plaque against the walls of the artery so as to open it up for proper blood flow. A little wire mesh tube is often left at the site of the plaque so as to prevent the arteries from collapsing.
During a CABG (bypass surgery), doctors usually take an blood vessel from another part of the body and attach it to the blocked artery to reroute the blood flow around the clogged portion of the artery.
After that the patient is needed to undergo cardiac rehabilitation programme, which lasts for several weeks and the person is recommended to eat heart healthy diet and exercise regularly so as to maintain good health and prevent future heart health risk.
 Stroke
For the stroke patients it is said that “time s brain “means if the symptoms are identified earlier, medication can help the patient to faster and there remain some chances of full recovery of the patient.
In case of ischemic stroke, the doctors usually give medication called Tissue Plasminogen activator, which helps to break up the clot. Also they can use some tiny devices to remove the clot from the blood vessels.
For the haemorrhagic stroke, surgery is done to repair the damaged blood vessel. Special clips may also be used in some cases so as to secure the ruptured blood vessel.
Life after stroke or heart attack
The offshoot of heart attack or stroke depends on the severity of the attack and how early I the person get the treatment.
The person with stroke attack generally experiences difficulty in walking and talking. Some may also loose brain function. Complete recovery is possible in some cases if the person is diagnosed and treated at proper time.
In case of heart attack, after treatment the patient can resume most of the activities they use to enjoy earlier. The life expectancy of the person depends upon his/her adherence to the doctors’ recommendations, eating heart healthy diet and exercising regularly.
