Election Commission of India (ECI) has informed Bombay High Court that it is considering a complete blackout of political advertisements on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Google 48-hour prior to polling, during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Election Commission has announced date of forthcoming Lok Sabha election which will be held in 7 phase. The Election will start on April 11 and continue till may 19 and the counting will be held on 23rd may. To conduct fair election, EC will keep tight eye on each and every phase during the election and to make it fair and clear for each party, EC has announced that all ads, posts, videos which are published on social media, will be monitored by Election Commission. Also, social media sites Facebook, Twitter, and Google have tied up with EC to uphold the integrity of political campaigns on their platforms.
Since social media platforms play a major role at the present scenario. People sometimes publish irrelevant post, videos, images referring to particular party or condemning someone without knowing its consequence. Hence to make awareness among the people on social media, The three US-based companies have made a written commitment to EC that social media platforms will accept only pre-certified advertisements during the election. They have confirmed that they will appoint grievance officers for the upcoming election.
As per the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora, The Election Commission will "closely monitor" social media platforms for any objectionable content and advertisements, which will have to be pre-certified by the poll panel.
Media certification and monitoring committees (MCMCs) are in place at the district and state levels. One social media expert will also involve in this committee at each level now. The candidates are suggested to furnish details of their social media accounts at the time of filing nominations.
On the other hand, Social media platforms have already started awareness campaigns for their users regarding unlawful conduct during the election particularly, the prohibited period of 48 hours. the platforms will deploy appropriate fact checkers, which will scan fake news, abuse etc. All the platforms have agreed to establish priority channels for the EC for quick response.
