Memory span is an interesting term, where by many studies are conducted worldwide to know what is a memory span for a particular being. We heard about several people who possess photographic /eidetic memory. We meet some person in life who even after several years remembers our name and minute details. This all creates a kind of curiosity surrounding memory and its functioning. Memory involves delicate coordination between 3 processes that are used to acquire, store, retain and later retrieve information. This memory is not stored in brain as books stored in a library, but it is widely distributedthroughout the brain cortex in the scattered form . After consolidation, long-term memories are stored throughout the brain as groups of neurons that are prepared to fire together in the same pattern that created the original experience, and each component of a memory is stored in the brain area that initiated it (e.g. groups of neurons in the visual cortex store a sight, neurons in the amygdala store the associated emotion, etc). Therefore there is no complete loss of memory even though one of the areas of brain is damaged.
In Ayurveda smriti is considered as one of the key factor in acquiring knowledge. Coordination of several interrelated factors such as Mana, Buddhi, Dhi, dhriti and smriti helps in acquiring knowledge. Various causative factors besides trauma are responsible for vitiating doshas and derailing the delicate balance resulting into impaired memory functioning. Several herbs are mentioned in ancient text books as a preventive and therapeutic to treat weak memory. Some like helps brahmi improves retention power, some helps in reducing stress while some improves nutrition and conduction of impulses.
